From the ABC Chairman and the Awards Chairman: Suzie Duckworth & Cheryll Klobuchar
Happy New Year!!
Suzie Duckworth and I will be conducting another “Informational Workshop” on Wednesday, January 13th. The workshop will be immediately following the Council’s General meeting.
The purpose of this workshop is to hopefully answer any questions you may have on how to apply for the Council Awards and the ABC projects. We will explain the various awards, what information and/or criteria is required when applying for the awards, including the proper way to submit the entries. This is the time to ask any questions you may have, from how to submit and entry to asking for clarification on a particular award. We want to make submitting entries for awards as painless as possible.
It is our hope that each club will send at least one representative to this workshop, if your club is unable to send someone that day but is interested in the information that will be handed out; please contact either Suzie Duckworth, ABC Chairman, at 363.1050 or suzied@verizon.net or Cheryll Klobuchar, Awards Chairman, at 463.4885 or c-klobuchar@cox.net.
Suzie and I hope to see many familiar, along with new faces at this workshop. So mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 13th, 10:00 a.m. at the Central Library; remember our workshop will be following the Council’s General meeting. So come out and enjoy Council’s program featuring Stephen Living as our invited speaker and then stay afterwards for an information filled meeting. This is one workshop you won’t want to miss. We hope to see you there.
60th Anniversary Celebration of Council of Garden Clubs

THEY CHANGED THE FACE OF THE CITY
As chairman of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Council I am excited about this event. On May 12, 2010 we will host a luncheon at the Cavalier Yacht and Country Club. MARK YOUR CALENDARS , YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT.
Our goal is to compile a record of the many contributions and achievements of the Council and it’s member clubs have made to our city. (Please note the information from Cheryl Klobuchar included in this newsletter.) Through this history booklet that each attendee will receive, we will recognize the many people who have helped us in our community improvement projects. Without the foresight of past individuals we would not have accomplished the beautification, conservation and preservation of our city. Through the Power Point presentation we will be able to view some of the many ways We Have Changed the Face of Our City.
To successful create the history Booklet and the Power Point Presentation WE NEED YOUR 100% participation. We want everyone to know that we are not just LOTIS (little ol’e ladies in tennis shoes) but that we are a strong group of doers.
I have a request to make of you. Please send us your photos, articles and club projects information by the COUNCIL MEETING ON JAN. 13, 2010 (PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN EXTENSION OF THE DATE WE ORIGINALLY SET. ) We will be available to accept your information near the registration table at the library. We will return your photos etc. after we have used them. We need time to assemble this information and we to include Every Club in these two presentations. If you can give an estimate of the amount of money you spent on these projects. There will be an opportunity for the clubs to win one of five COMMUNITY INPROVEMENT AWARDS simply by loaning us the requested information.
On Tuesday May 11, 2010 we will hold a flower arranging workshop, taught by Tablescapes expert Carolyn Dennis. those who participate in the workshop will display their creations as centerpieces at the Anniversary Luncheon. There will be a fee for the workshop and you will be keep your centerpiece.
If you have photos ready or you have questions , please contact me or other members of this committee.
Sylvia Brewington 340-0907, e-mail sylvbrew@cox.net or Cheryl K. who will be creating the booklet.
ATTENTION: Just a reminder that the club project information is due on January 2nd. The 60th anniversary committee will be putting together a booklet containing all of the projects that the clubs and the Council have done over the past 60 years. I know that this is a big request. Compiling and editing this booklet is going to take time and our plan is to give a booklet to each guest that attends our anniversary celebration. If you are unable to get the information to me on January 2nd; the committee has agreed to extend the deadline to the Council’s general meeting on January 13th to give the club’s who are in need some extra time. Please bring your club information to the meeting and turn it in to me at that time.
If you are having difficulty putting this information together or have any questions, please give me a call at 463-4885. This was never intended to be a lot of work, just a way of compiling a record of the projects that our member clubs and the Council have provided to the City over the past 60 years.
I look forward to receiving your information and putting it in our booklet.
Thanks for all your hard work and efforts in getting this information together for the Council.

Arbor Day will be April 23rd, 2010 and the city of Virginia Beach will be celebrating the 30th Year of being a TREE CITY U. S. A. The Council of Garden Clubs has played a major part in the city receiving this award. We will be participating again in April in the Arbor Day celebration. At this time, the place for the celebration has not been chosen. I will be meeting soon with Kristina Salzman, city arborist to help with details for the event. I am trying to gather information about the council's early participation in Arbor Day. I would like to locate all the previous Arbor Day Chairmen. I know that Mary Winder, deceased, Sylvia Brewington, Jean Williams, and Susan Ott served as chairmen. If you know of others who have served in this capacity, please let me know. And put April 23rd, 2010 on your calendar. I would like to have a representative from every club attend the Arbor Day event.

As always, there will be fabulous items on which to bid, as well as a pre-lunch white elephant sale with one-of-a-kind treasures, a jewelry sale with glittering and lovely adornments, and a plant sale with houseplants, garden plants, beautiful baskets and herbs.
